Female Genital Mutilation (circumcision) has been practiced for centuries in Africa and other parts of the world for more than 3000 years. More than 250 million women have been circumcised world wide, and an additional 3 million girls are at risk of circumcision every year (WHO). It has no health benefits and and so many girls have lost their lives by its practice. It is regarded by the WHO as a crime against humanity, a violation of human rights and a brutal form of violence against women.
Egypt has the highest number in cases in the world, with a rate of 87% declared by The WHO & UNICEF in 2017, we predict that more than 40 million women & girls have been circumcised in Egypt between the ages of 7 -69 years.
Ending FGM globally is imperative, It has no religious background and is condemned by most religions. This requires a change in cultural belief, better education, awareness, and raising socio-economic status of practicing families.
We have worked for the past 22 years, helping to stop FGM practice in Egypt, Africa and globally by spreading awareness, sexual education and giving lectures around the globe at international conferences, medical academies, universities and institutions.
We also started the 1st Multidisciplinary Centre for Female Genital Mutilation Care in the Middle East and Africa, introducing non-surgical therapies and surgical techniques for restorative surgeries (Clitoral Reconstructive Surgery)
We are pioneers in these restorative surgeries, and offer FGM victims a chance to regain their dignity, self esteem, confidence and holistic physical and sexual quality of life.
Infibulation, is cultural tradition in Female Genital Mutilation, it consists of covering most of the vaginal orifice with skin, by cutting and suturing the labia minora and labia majora together on both sides. It is believed to preserve virginity and family honor within practicing communities.
De-fibulation (cutting the skin seal) is required before child delivery, vaginal surgery, and sometimes before marriage. Women with Pharaonic circumcision (type III) describe cosmetic and functional improvements after a de-dibulation procedure and Clitoral Reconstructive Surgery.
De-fibulation, is a simple procedure performed under local anesthesia, aesthetic enhancement of the vulva, labia majora, and labia minora reconstruction is also possible.
Clitoral Reconstructive Surgery after FGM: involves modification of the remaining clitoral body, to simulate a normal un-cut clitoris.
Technique includes, releasing the remaining clitoral stump from adhesions, cutting the suspensory ligament, reconstructing a neo-glans, and re-positioning it in the normal clitoral area.
This has been found to improve clitoral sensitivity, sexual function and enhance genital appearance, as well as psychological benefits noted in improved confidence, self esteem. body image identity and quality of life.
Clitoral Reconstructive Surgery has been proven to improve sexual desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm intensity, and pain reduction by removing peri-clitoral fibrosis, thus making the clitoris more accessible to stimulation.
This highly specialized cosmetic & reconstructive genital surgery (CRS) has been noted to help FGM victims, enhance their sexual experience, regain their self esteem, confidence, female body image awareness, with improvement in quality of life and partner relationship due to enhanced sensitivity and psycho-sexual wellbeing.
The therapeutic goal is to achieve aesthetic refinement of the vulva to resemble uncut women, and enhance sexual function and sensitivity by adjustment the labia majora, labia minora, and clitoral hood around the clitoris (clitoral reconstructive surgery). This aesthetic refinement has been shown to dramatically enhance self confidence, self esteem, and equality with uncut women; which adds to the psychological benefits that exceeds the physical.
We can now reconstruct a small labia minora even after complete labial amputation from the vulva, this is a new technique developed exclusively for labial amputation victims of female genital mutilation.
Genital Reconstructive Surgery
Genital Reconstructive Surgery is also performed in cases of:
1-Physical trauma (accidents)
2-Violence Against Women (Rape)
3-Revision surgery for surgical scars
4-Mullerian Agensis (congenital absence of vagina)
